We’ve all done some incredibly nerdy things. I mean, it’s hard not to in this day and age! So when this week’s Five Fandom Friday topic came up, I got to thinking. And I am pretty sure I have come up with the best list I can out of all the things I have done. I have folks who can attest to the nerdiness that can happen around me. So let’s go right to it!
CONGA LINE THROUGH FANTASYLAND AT DISNEYLAND
It’s exactly what you think it is. Back in 2012, Disneyland and Walt Disney World introduced “One More Disney Day,” a 24-hour event that took place on Leap Year. This would give park-goers one more day to spend in the Happiest Place on Earth. Funny that the recollection of this memory happens on the day another 24-hour Disneyland and Walt Disney World party is occurring. What a lucky coincidence!
Every hour, Disneyland would do an announcement of what the time was and had a little celebration, so you know some back story. While the night was moving into early morning, I’d say around 1am, my friends and I were walking through Fantasyland when the hourly announcement began. Out of nowhere, a conga line sprung up! We immediately joined in, thinking it was just for fun…until we realized just how many people joined in behind us. It became a sensation! We found ourselves back in Fantasyland every hour to keep the conga line spirit alive, and each hour, the line got bigger. More and more people joined, and it was just a sheer fun and nerdy time had by all!
KISSED BY JOHN BARROWMAN AT MY FIRST SDCC
This one is well…there’s a video. We’ll let that explain.
PROPSE IN FULL COSPLAY AT WONDERCON
Convention fun? Check. Full matching cosplay? Yup! How about a shiny engagment ring? Yes, that did happen. During Wondercon 2014, I just could not contain my love and excitement for the lady in costume next to me, and decided it was time to finally take that plunge and ask for her hand in marriage. How did I do it? Well, you know that fountain outside of the Anaheim Convention Center? Well, the photo next to this shows just what happened, with the romantic lighting of the fountain, some people gathered around, and the amount of happiness that is on both of our faces. We actually got recognized the next day for it too!
YEARS OF BEING FIRST IN LINE FOR MIDNIGHT MOVIE OPENINGS
This one holds a near and dear one to my heart. I have a group of friends who spent years being the first ones in line for midnight movie openings. We’re talking Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Marvel, DC,etc. You get the picture. The theater even began to expect us there!
It started off as just something we did for fun, and it grew into something more. There were groups who were behind us every single movie as well, and they expected us to be there. Even if we were’t the first in line, we were second, or third, and always had the same group camaraderie with the people around us. We all knew how to have a good time while passing the hours until we could see whatever movie was on the agenda for the night on the big screen. It felt like home…when we were seeing movies. We have plenty of stories that could bore you, but they are nerdy nonetheless.
SANG SHOWTUNES WITH JESSE L. MARTIN AND GRANT GUSTIN AT SDCC 2014
You read that correctly. Late in the night on Saturday of SDCC 2014, the Nerds Doing Stuff staff was walking from the Gaslamp back to the Hyatt, our hotel headquarters. As we were walking towards along the outside of the convention center, I noticed that the folks waiting for the light to change with us were none other than Jesse L. Martin, Grant Gustin, and Willa Holland from The Flash and Arrow fame. What happened next was what makes this ever so nerdy!
My friend decided to, because of Jesse L. Martin, to start singing Broadway showtunes, specifically “Circle of Life” from The Lion King and “Santa Fe” from RENT. I shushed him, because I didn’t want to make it awkward. But Martin started to sing along, and before we knew it, we were all in a sing along on the streets of San Diego. It was sheer nerdy bliss. We parted ways at the hotel, but that definitely will be one of my all time favorite SDCC moments.
These are only a few of the many nerdy things I have done. My counterpart, Stacey, has her own list of nerdy things that you should read up on, because chances are, her nerdiness will astound you!
