Where can you find the newest selection of comic books, delicious cold-brewed coffee, collectibles, and an all-around comfortable setting to let your nerdy self run wild?
The answer is The Perky Nerd.
We’ve been to our fair share of comic shops around the Los Angeles area and had our share of good times at shops such as Galaxy of Comics, Earth 2, Collectors Paradise, and Golden Apple Comics. But since we moved at the end of last year, we’ve been looking for a comic book shop to take the role of our “home” shop, somewhere that we would want to frequent. We think we may have found that spot in The Perky Nerd.
What is The Perky Nerd?
Imagine a space where comic books, great collectibles, art, coffee, tabletop gaming, comfy couches and tables, and general nerdity live as one- that’s The Perky Nerd.
Located on Magnolia Blvd, nestled in the bustling heart of Burbank, CA, the comics and coffee shop throws open its doors weekly to all patrons- male, female, grown-up, child, geek and non-geek. The Perky Nerd was the idea of Tiffany Melius, who wanted to bring a new vibe to comic book shops. Tiffany spoke to the L.A. Times during the opening week of the Perky Nerd and had this to say:
The Perky Nerd plans to be different, the “kind of that place where you can go if you’re a newbie and you don’t have to feel like ‘Oh no, I don’t know everything about comics!’ Because I sort of feel like when I got into places, and I’m like ‘Oh god, they’re going to expect me to know everything about this one character,’ like, their origin and everything, and I just want to read this comic.
You can see that “kind of place” just from walking in the door. The decor is bright and inviting. The front window showcases the books on the wooden shelves, the art on the walls is the perfect combination of candy and superhero (you’ll know what we mean if you visit,) and the overall vibe is just…welcoming. You feel like you do not need to know everything in the world about comics, but you can pick up a #1 released that week and read it in comfort, then maybe have a discussion of it over a cold-brewed coffee.
The Perky Nerd is also a community embracing shop, holding events where all are invited. If you follow along on their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, you’ll find updates about tabletop gaming days, the yearly Free Comic Book Day, and an awesome comic book club for ladies that meets on a regular basis.
This past Saturday, in celebration with Geek Pride Day (which took place on May 25th), The Perky Nerd partnered up with Nerd Out App for a Geek Pride Day Celebration & Trivia night. If you don’t know what the Nerd Out App is, you’re missing out. Nerd Out is a mobile nerd event calendar application available for download on Apple and Android devices, so you’ll never miss out on a nerdy event again! Get on it! In addition to Nerd Out and the Perky Nerd, the Marcel Waffle Truck was in attendance to feed the hungry crowd. Just look at that banana goodness right there…look at it…
The 3 rounds of trivia kept the night fast-paced, fun, slightly competitive, and just the right amount of nerdy. Questions ranged from Star Wars to Game of Thrones, naming actors/characters just by photos of their eyes, and even a round of “Who played Batman on the big screen?” The teams were incredibly on point in their answers, and each of the three rounds were close in final score. A huge shout-out to the Nerd Out app for a great night of trivia!
We will definitely be visiting The Perky Nerd on a regular basis, and we think that you should make sure you get yourself down there too!
