We admit it, we love Godzilla films. We’ve seen our fill of the classics, put on good ol’ Matthew Broderick’s stint with the King for some laughs (poor Madison Square Garden,) and watched Quicksilver and Walter White take on the MUTOs along side the Tokyo’s nuclear nuisance. So when it was announced that Toho would be adding a new addition to the Godzilla universe, we were overjoyed.
As you can see from the short trailer that was released in late 2015, the usual business of running absolutely terrified from the monster that chases behind them is afoot as usual in Tokyo. While the trailer does not show all too much, it’s been said by Shinji Higuchi, Godzilla: Resurgence‘s special effects director, to expect something not previously seen before. Higuchi
“the most terrifying Godzilla that Japan’s cutting-edge special-effects movie-making can muster”.
That seems like a bold promise, right? Wrong. The beginning of January brought the audience’s first look at Godzilla. A few photos leaked on Monday, January 4th via Bloody Disgusting show the details of what is to come in the Summer 2016 film.
The images definitely do not look like the Godzilla that audiences have seen in the original films, and definitely not like the Godzilla that American audiences have seen. So what is with the difference? The gnarled teeth, the red skin, all of it different from any past reincarnation. The folks over a BirthMoviesDeath have an explanation for that. SPOILERS AHEAD, if you don’t want to know!
A source inside Toho has shared plot details that not only shine light on Godzilla’s look but should make fans super excited to see the film whenever it finally comes out in America (it hits Japan this summer).
So when we first see Godzilla in the film, he is going to be a burnt-out and scarred monster, which is what we see represented in these photos. But he won’t look like that the whole film. Like some of his foes before him, Godzilla will actually change as the film progresses. I’ve been told that by his third form, he should look like a much more standard Godzilla.
What exactly does that mean? How does Godzilla end up scarred in the first place, and what makes the monster evolve? We will have to wait and see this Summer, or at least until a full trailer is released to the public.
Let us know what you think happens, or how Godzilla shapes up during its final form!
