The entertainment world has always had a fascination with zombies, one that has been brought full force with the titan that is The Walking Dead. But what viewers saw in The Walking Dead was what happened after the outbreak and everything since then. We saw the story through Rick Grimes, but never saw what happened at the start of the outbreak and oncoming zombie apocalypse. Until now.
Since it’s announcement, the spin-off to Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, has had everyone (including this writer) wondering just how the cast, producers, and creative team could pull off what they had already done with the original series. How could you make something wholly original while also keeping yourself distinct? We will all find out tonight, as the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead premieres on AMC with a 90-minute episode at 9pm Eastern, 6pm Pacific.
But what is Fear the Walking Dead?
Living in the same universe as The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.
Plus, the setting is in Los Angeles, a city where folks may already be considered a zombie of sorts, right at the first days of the disaster we already know of. When we heard that description when it was first announced, we were so in. You have to be kind of excited with the fact that you’ll be able to recognize the action, destruction, and certain death that is to come to these characters we will be introduced to.
It’s normal to feel anxious about a spin-off series, as so many have come before and done so poorly. But when you read about the excitement of the cast and the team behind the show, especially Robert Kirkman, you cannot help be excited for what is to come. When speaking about the characters in Fear the Walking Dead, he mentioned the fact that “they’ll learn new things, they’ll find new tools, they’ll learn faster or slower but what we end up with is a very, VERY different show… set in a world we LOVE exploring as much as we’d all NEVER want to live there.” How could you not be excited? Admit it, we’ve all thought out our plan if the zombie apocalypse ever did happen, but we hope it never does, as we would never want to live there and experience it.
AMC has already released the first 3 minutes of tonight’s premiere episode, and you can watch that right now if you can’t hold back in anticipation. Click your undead self here for the video!
