Supernaturals. Horror. Lore. And oh, plenty of blood. If you’ve been following along on Twitter with my recent new-found love for the comic Goners, then you will know each time a new issue of this book comes out, I’m as giddy as a child on Christmas morning. We’ve read Issue #5, so strap in and let’s Get Gone together!
Now, where did we last leave the Latimer children, Zoe and Josiah, without giving away too much of the plot line? Ah yes, Bellweather Sanatorium. Perfect place for children, am I right? Of course, they are there for a purpose, finding a figure from their past that has had quite the interesting turn in their life. Then, throw in a hoard of mythical beasts, your trusty Latimer Family compatriots, and you’ve got a recipe for one interesting continuation of the current story. Keep in mind, this is all building up to Issue #6, which if is anything like Issue #5…oh boy!
The writing this issue is once again on par with the first 4 issues, if not better, and writer Jacob Semahn continues to build plot and lore that is interesting, thought provoking, and keeps us wanting more. I mean, take this line from the pages of Issue 5 and tell me it isn’t clever:
Seriously? We’re party crashing Hell and you two are still at it? Give it a rest…Jesus.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself. Kudos to you, Mr. Semahn.
The art on the pages continues to dazzle the eyes, and I have to give the utmost credit to the whole team- Jorge Corona, Steve Wands, Gabriel Cassata, and Morgan Beem for bringing to life the images with use of colors and lines that pop off the pages. If you need any reason to pick up this book beyond what I’ve said, pick it up for the art alone. Gorgeous.
It’s going to be hard to wait until the 6th issue, the conclusion of this story arc which comes out next month, due to the last few pages of Issue #5. Why you do this to us, Goners team? Why? (We know why, but we’ll still be anticipating issue #6 like crazy in the meantime.)
You can get your hands on Goners #5 at your local comic book shop on Wednesday, February 18th. Make sure to pick up Issues 1-4 while you’re at it too! If you can’t get them there, the issues are available as digital editions as well.
We give Issue #5 of Goners 4 out of 5 stars and deem it a must-have on your pull list this week! Happy Reading!
