Ever since Pacific Rim graced the big screens and lodged itself firmly within the gears of our mech, fans have clamored for news of more. Pacific Rim 2 was happening, then maybe not. It was a veritable rollercoaster of hope. Then it was happening again, and we’ve been full steam ahead in anticipation of the next installment.

Guillermo del Toro took to twitter to tease some big news from about the giant Mecha vs. Kaiju action, promising exciting news.

He promptly announced that Steven S. DeKnight would be on board as director of the blockbuster sequel.  Del Toro’s announcement has been since confirmed by various outlets including Nerdist and Io9.

DeKnight’s credits include the Netflix series Daredevil and STARZ’s Spartacus. We’re pretty certain we can count on some top notch action under DeKnight’s direction. While this may be his debut directorship on a feature film, he’s managed to ramp up the action and attain success with both of these series.  Guillermo de Toro remains involved as a producer alongside Mary Parent, Thomas Tull, and Jon Jashni. The current script has been penned by Jon Spaihts’ (Prometheus and Dr. Strange).

There’s no release date in sight, but it’s nonetheless exciting to see this project sailing forward.

As Guillermo del Toro quipped, sweet dreams Pacific Rim fans–may you be swimming with Kaiju and protected by Mecha.
